Cloudera Fast Forward Labs Quarterly Updates – October 2019

Cloudera Fast Forward is an applied machine learning research and consulting services group within Cloudera. We help enterprises accelerate and innovate through the adoption of emerging ML technologies, cutting-edge technical architectures, and ML best practices. Through knowledge transfer and skills development, we empower organizations to continually evolve and differentiate by leveraging their data. Enabling ethical and responsible ML outcomes for our customers, at scale, is our highest priority.  We like to think of ourselves as your data nerd best friends.

In this quarterly update, we provide an overview of our most recent work, including a sneak peek at our latest research and a synopsis of upcoming events. If you’d like to receive more frequent updates, please sign up for our newsletter here (look for the section towards the middle of the page on the right, labeled “Keep Up With Tomorrow”).

Research Updates

At the end of July, we released two new research reports: Transfer Learning for Natural Language Processing, and Deep Learning for Image Analysis (2019 Edition).

We posted a follow-up article on Transfer Learning – from the ground up to our blog, and have continued to reflect on NLP and Transfer Learning; it’s an exciting space right now. We’ve also posted some of our past newsletter articles to our blog, including one on Automating Weak Supervision.

Experiments

In our last update, we announced the launch of our new experiments portal, which hosts an assortment of our machine learning prototypes, as well as demos and code created by our team.  We’ve added two new prototypes to the portal – ConvNet Playground was built to accompany our report on Deep Learning for Image Analysis (2019 Edition), and TextFlix was built to accompany Transfer Learning for Natural Language Processing.

Events

We saw a great turnout at Data Science Wrangle NYC in September. The event included some great lightning talks from several data science practitioners (including Cloudera Fast Forward Research Engineer Victor Dibia) and an opportunity to catch up with old friends and new from the data science community.

We’d love to invite you to join us at a future Data Science Wrangle event!

Upcoming Speaking Engagements

  • Victor Dibia will be speaking on *”Handtrack.js: Building Gesture Based Interactions in the Browser Using Tensorflow.js”* at the TensorflowWorld Conference on October 31st.
  • Victor will also be speaking on “ML in the Browser: Interactive Experiences with Tensorflow.js” at QCon in San Francisco on November 13th.
  • Shioulin Sam will be speaking on Learning with Limited Labeled Data at ODSC London on November 21st.

If you’re attending any of these conferences, please do stop by to say hello!  In the meantime, best wishes for an excellent fall from the team at Cloudera Fast Forward Labs!
