Introducing the 2018 Data Hero Nominees and Winners – Americas!

Early last year we announced the Hortonworks Data Heroes initiative. It’s our way of recognizing the Data Visionaries, Data Scientists, Data Architects, HCC Community Champion, and Cognitive Honors awards to organizations transforming their businesses through Big Data.

Hortonworks has over 1,300 total customers spanning every industry, each with a unique Big Data journey. Our Data Heroes program lets us highlight a few customers who are helping create radical change in their industries.

WHO ARE THE DATA HEROES?

  • A Data Visionary: who recognizes the potential of Big Data to transform their organization, and leads the business to turn that vision into reality.
  • A Data Scientist: who studies the data, tests and re-tests hypotheses, and creates modern data applications that deliver insights to the organization’s business and its customers.
  • A Data Architect: who seamlessly and creatively integrates Connected Data Platforms into their organizations infrastructure.
  • An HCC Community Champion: who is instrumental in contributing to the community, sharing their expertise and best practices as an organization, and to help other customer and Hortonworks be successful.
  • Cognitive Honors: Who is instrumental in transforming a traditional environment to a cognitive powerhouse leveraging predictive analytics and machine learning

Introducing Our nominees

Data Visionary Nominees:

American Water– leveraging both HDP and HDF. Their digital transformation efforts have been key to their accelerated adoption of big data and advanced analytics leveraging an open source modern data architecture

Norfolk Southern – leverages HDF for data ingestion from its MQ platform to parse and ingest data to HDFS and Hive

PayPal – WINNER! – utilizes Hortonworks HDP environment, and other technologies, which are used in a highly multi-tenant environment. They run large scale analytics use cases such as: transaction fraud, risk scoring, and finance reporting

Data Scientist Nominees:

Machine Zone – using Hortonworks HDP as a platform for data science using Spark, Hive, and Druid

PayPal – utilizes Hortonworks HDP environment, and other technologies, which are used in a highly multi-tenant environment. They run large scale analytics use cases such as: transaction fraud, risk scoring, and finance reporting

Symantec – WINNER! – leverages Hortonworks HDP, along with Kafka, Storm, HBase, Hive and Spark to scan years & petabytes of data to identify trends and detect threats

Data Architect Nominees:

Cincinnati Insurance – developed data and analytics program leveraging Hortonworks HDP and HDF

Claro Colombia – WINNER! – migrated from a traditional data warehouse infrastructure to a cutting-edge fast data architecture built upon Hortonworks HDP and HDF

Love’s Travel Shop – built a real-time point-of-sales solution, using Hortonworks HDF, to transform from a traditional data team to an innovative big data organization with over 400 stores

HCC Community Champion

All three nominees have been instrumental in contributing to the community, sharing their expertise and best practices as an organization to help other Hortonworks customers be successful.

Lowe’s – Lowe’s is leveraging Hortonworks HDP to drive their Data Science, Data Analytics, and Customer Insights areas of practice providing a holistic view

Discover – Discover is building a modern data pipeline, leveraging Hortonworks HDF, to serve as a foundation for their next-gen data analytics

Universal – WINNER! – Universal is using Hortonworks HDF to stream real-time guest interactions driving new and repeat visits to their world-class theme parks and resorts across the globe.

Cognitive Honors Champion

This category recognizes an organization who is instrumental in transforming a traditional environment to a cognitive powerhouse leveraging predictive analytics and machine learning.

TRAC Intermodal – WINNER! – TRAC Intermodal leverages Hortonworks HDP to manage multiple data sources and different lines of business and analytic use cases on a shared platform.  This enables real-time decision making and streams data to gain insights.
