In the final installment in the series, Vijay Raja, Director of Industry & Solutions Marketing at Cloudera shares his views on how the telecom sector is changing and where it goes next.
Hi Vijay, thank you so much for joining us again. To continue where we left off, how are ML and IoT influencing the Telecom sector, and how is Cloudera supporting this industry evolution?
Machine learning and AI are going to be critical for Communication Service Providers (CSPs)to succeed in the future as traditionally telcos have always been data-rich but insight poor.
They have access to huge amounts of complex data from a range of sources but have had limited success driving meaningful value and action from it to drive significant business impacts. This is where machine learning analytics and AI come in and change things, allowing telcos to get much more value from the data they already have.
From a data perspective, CSPs now want the ability to ingest and analyze any type of data, whether that is structured, unstructured or streaming data, anywhere regardless of where it lands – at the edge, on-premises, at the data center, or in the public, private or hybrid cloud.
They need to ingest and process data from multiple sources, combining and correlating network, customer, and device data with activity logs, location, billing and rating data, OSS and inventory data, CRM data, external data, and much more. They also need an integrated suite of proven and open data management tools and analytics engines, in order to drive insights and analytics from all of this data — with the robust security, governance, data protection, and management capabilities that organizations require.
Telcos today need an end-to-end data management and analytics platform that can collect, process, manage and analyze data to drive insights and enable machine learning to implement some of the most compelling use cases, such as IoT and connected ecosystems.

In Europe, one of the leading CSPs is using the platform to bring in data from black boxes in connected cars to improve road safety, for assistance, for monitoring and they’re even using data from connected devices to provide targeted insurance offerings based on specific risks of individual drivers.
Here in North America, one of the leading Tier-1 CSPs is using the platform to offer IoT and telematics services to provide location-based services – speed alerts, boundary alerts, and driving behavior. Using the data collected, they are also able to offer services such as vehicle diagnostics, provide roadside assistance, stolen vehicle assistance, and emergency assistance as well.
Some of the leading providers across Europe and APAC are leveraging the power of the platform to power smart cities and enable innovative use cases such as footfall analytics to understand how pedestrians and cyclists navigate the urban landscape.
Another interesting use case is with Deutsche Telekom who has built a “data intelligence hub,” built on Cloudera to act as a data exchange and marketplace and for analytics.
This is essentially a third-party data marketplace, with data from retail, enterprises from utilities, and government agencies and they can all push data into the platform and it offers AI tools and ML tools and analytics to help drive value from their data.
A model like this is where the world is headed, with data not just confined to a specific industry but shared across the board to add greater value and provide more compelling insights and actions.
The complexity of telco operations and meeting customer needs is clearly evolving – how can Cloudera help telcos to manage this?
For CSPs, the opportunities to leverage data intelligence seem boundless. Because CSPs generate and aggregate more data than perhaps any other industry—and because they are the hub for connecting data to businesses and consumers around the world—they are in a unique position to use data to empower digital transformation for themselves and their customers.
All of the use cases that we see and the primary customer needs within the telco sector can be defined in four key use case buckets.
- The first is customer experience management, businesses have so much customer data, and bringing all the diverse data sources together means that they can deliver more compelling, personalized offers, better customer care, and an improved overall experience. It also enables things like real-time targeted marketing and promotions, based on micro segments in order to deliver the right offer to the right customer at the right time with the right context.
- The next bucket is around using data for network optimization and intelligence, to more effectively manage network capacity and traffic. This is about using data and analytics to effectively evaluate and make decisions around network expansions or decommissioning. based on network usage and patterns. This is important from a strategic perspective.
- Operational analytics is another fundamental area for the sector and this covers how Telcos can optimize their supporting operations around managing fraud, which is a big issue in the telco space. It also covers how CSPs address revenue assurance leakage and cybersecurity issues.
- Finally, the last bucket is focused on new business and the provision of digital services, where CSPs can enable IoT and connected devices to better leverage new revenues opportunities and diversify into providing compelling new services and solutions.
