Data Science Wrangle: The Data Science and ML Event For Leading Practitioners

Last month we were thrilled to launch Cloudera Data Science Wrangle—a traveling practitioner learning and social event for data scientists, data and ML engineers, DevOps/ML Ops leaders, data product managers, and business leaders looking to drive innovation with the latest in data science and machine learning.

During the week of Strata Data Conference, where we announced the release of our enterprise-ready Cloudera Data Platform and Cloudera Machine Learning, Data Science Wrangle NY brought together over a hundred data-loving professionals from across the world for an evening of forward-thinking presentations, networking, and lively discussion about the latest and greatest in Data Science and ML— all, over drinks and delicious local foods.

Data Science Wrangle NY Highlights

In addition to great conversations about everything from the latest research to emerging technologies, one of the biggest highlights was our engagement by speakers from a wide breadth of backgrounds and focus areas. From deep learning for image analysis, to analyzing tax documents from global non-profits, to discussing how data science impacts real-world businesses, every speaker brought a unique perspective into how data science and ML are shaping aspects of our work and personal lives.

Susan Sun, a freelance data scientist with DataKind shared how analyzing IRS 990 forms yields new insight into how nonprofits operate, reach their goals, and represent their public-facing entities. One interesting finding from her research was understanding how organizations that did not directly benefit large donors, relied largely on individual contributors. This body of work, helped shed light on the patterns and trends of nonprofit organizations and is helping to pave the way for how organizations can better operate. DataKind seeks to harness the power of data to benefit humanity. To get involved, visit https://www.datakind.org/.

Another excellent topic covered was around deep learning for image analysis—presented by Victor Dibia from Cloudera Fast Forward Labs. His research around convolutional neural networks (CNNs) approaches aspects of how to navigate the right approach to generate accurate results. In addition to diving into how to select the right model (whether AutoML or handcrafted) for different types of use cases, Victor also dove into issues of interpretability and eliminating the “black box effect” of CNNs. You can check out the ConvNet Playground prototype for semantic search using pre-trained deep learning models to learn more.
