When Cloudera was formed about 10 years ago, the founders believed that companies would jump at the chance to store, manage, and analyze their data in the cloud. Thus, they came up with the name Cloudera, which was a play on “era of cloud.” But, much to their surprise, companies weren’t ready for cloud; they were more focused with on-prem. So, Cloudera focused on helping companies with storing, managing, and analyzing data on-prem. But, over the last few years, the company knew that organizations were starting to look at the cloud more seriously, so unknown to most people, Cloudera had developed its data platform for the cloud.
Cloudera’s data platform in the cloud is a hidden gem, one that leverages the strengths of the open-source components but with a cloud deployment. We believe this has been validated by The Forrester WaveTM: Cloud Hadoop/ Spark Platforms, Q1 2019 report, which listed Cloudera and Hortonworks (more later about this) in the Leaders category. This report notes that key differentiators were performance, data management and security.
If you take a close look at the report, you will see that Cloudera and Hortonworks are rated among the top three in the current offering category.
Cloudera expects to offer a best of both worlds data platform from the respective current offerings.
In the area of Strategy and Market Presence, Cloudera and Hortonworks scored the same. This is where the recently completed merger between Cloudera and Hortonworks is relevant.
The combined Cloudera – Hortonworks has essentially doubled the number of employees, customers, and revenue. This will make the new Cloudera a formidable competitor as it has the resources to innovate and execute.
In addition, Cloudera has greatly expanded it’s vision with the Enterprise Data Cloud, from Edge to AI. Cloudera’s products enable companies to capture, store, manage and analyze data anywhere. The platform provides a robust array of analytics and data processing frameworks, all working from a single copy of the data, under rigorous security and access controls.
If that’s not enough to convince you to give Cloudera’s data platform in the cloud a try, then there is one other aspect that this report hasn’t covered, namely deployment options. Cloudera realizes that many companies have a significant amount of data on-prem and they might not be ready to leave their data center just yet. So, Cloudera’s platform is meant to be run on-prem, in the public cloud, any combination of the two (hybrid cloud) as well as across multiple clouds (including AWS, Microsoft, GCP, Oracle and IBM). This ensure companies have the flexibility and choice to pick the option that best meets their workloads and business needs, without being locked into a particular deployment.
